I think for the most part nearly all types of music can be endeared to kids pretty easily. Let's face it… there's nothing children love more than noise… and wow bonus this is actually catchy, gets-stuck-in-your-head noise. So before you throw your kids in front of the television and teach them the wonders of the remote control, consider bringing out your old cassette tapes, CD players and vinyl records. Give them a taste of the good old stuff before they get too attached to that hug and rhyme loving purple monster Barney, or the uber cute Miley Cyrus.
Here are some tips to help you get started on your journey to educating your children about all types of music:
DON'T stick to one genre. If you like opera, fine. But that doesn't mean you need to play it 24/7. Familiarity can breed contempt.
DO surprise your kids by mixing things up once in a while. Play the Highschool Musical soundtrack on a road trip instead of the much-abused Greatest Hits of Tina Turner or Mariah. Show them that you're flexible on the music front and are willing to try out what they like instead of always playing what you want to listen to. Your willingness to try new things will teach them to be open to new experiences and help them be more accepting of your own preferences.
DO pay attention to what they listen to and point out interesting trivia about the performers you are familiar with. Not all kids nowadays know Mrs. Victoria Beckham was once Posh Spice. Sure, her fashion sense may not have changed overmuch but her persona sure has. Even if you don't recognize one name in their playlist, take it as an opportunity to learn something new.
DO attempt to sing to and with your kids while they are young. Your voice may not be Australian Idol Material and you may be as deaf as a post when it comes to recognising the nuances in tone and pitch… but personally, some of my best childhood memories are associated with songs that my family and I sang during our many road trips and moments together.
HAVE FUN!
Just keep in mind that music is supposed to bring people of different backgrounds and paths in life together for a brief moment in a profound or even sometimes shallow shared experience. Music is meant to be shared, appreciated and enjoyed in all its forms. As a parent you should be open to new genres in order to give your child the opportunity to experience as much as they can. My parents taught me that music is one of the best ways to communicate and learn. Maybe someday I'll get the chance to pass this on to my own children.
