Yesterday on the blog I put up a simple tutorial on how to make a no sew tutu. I thought it would be fun to make a matching ballerina peg doll.
What to use the peg doll for:
Birthday Party craft
Birthday Party Favour
Home craft
Christmas (make it an angel by making the tutu white and adding some wings)
What you need:
Wooden peg (you can get these from craft stores)
Stocking, wool, elastic, hair band or string (for the pirouette arms)
Tulle (scraps will do)
Elastic
Fine point permanent marker
Paint or permanent markers
Drill — size 4 (optional)
Glue
Scissors
What to do:
1. Cut strips of tulle about 1 cm by 9 cm (or adjust to the desired lengh of the skirt). Don’t worry too much about getting it perfect because it’s easy to adjust the length of the skirt with scissors once it’s complete.
2. Tie a piece of elastic tight around the peg doll waist. Thread pieces of tulle under the elastic and tie in a knot so both ends hang evenly. Continue until the skirt is complete.
{make the skirt}
3. Remove skirt from peg and decorate with a permanent marker pen (or paint). I prefer to use paint pens or permanent markers so I don’t need to wait for paint to dry.
{decorate the body}
4. Draw face and hair on the peg. Put a bit of personality in the face. For the hair bow, tie a small piece of tulle in a knot and trim the sides to get the right size for the bow. Attach to the doll’s head with craft glue.
{draw on the face}
5. You may leave the doll as it is now or if you are happy to drill out, you can put pirouette arms in.
{drill the arm hole}
6. Cut a hair band (or use old stockings, wool, string or elastic) for the arms. Cut to size and feed through the hole. You may need to small sharp object to push it through the arm hole.
{thread the arms through hole}
7. Put the skirt back on and you’re done! Here are things you can use the peg ballerina doll for:
-
- Play with the doll
- Use to decorate a bedroom
- Give as a gift
- Give as a birthday party bag favour
- Use as a birthday party activity (you will need to prep the pegs by drilling the hole and threading through the arms (the two most difficult parts). For very young children, I would make the skirt too and allow them to decorate the peg with felt pens before putting the skirt on.

Why don’t you make the no-sew tutu as well!
