Boys Construction Birthday Party

When people asked our little boy what he received for his birthday he said, “Lots of dirt!”

It’s true: I did get my son a pile of dirt for his consruction birthday party. I also got a load of secondhand diggers to add to his collection (there needed to be a few to go around). This turned out to be the easiest birthday party yet!

Preparation

Collecting the dirt was the hardest part of the party. It involved several wheelie bins, lots of digging and a frantic late night run. Fortunately, the park across from our home was being resurfaced and the council was happy for the to dirt to be used. You can get a pile of dirt from most hardware, landscaping and gardening stores.

The Party

Materials
Dirt
Diggers and trucks
Planks of wood
Stick and triangle pieces of paper for the flags
Drawing materials

We placed a few pieces of wood near the dirt pile to see if they would be used. They were. The children made flags and gathered all the diggers on the top of the dirt pile. The adults enjoyed a cuppa while watching the kids have a ball.

When you put 12 little friends wearing old clothes, BYO diggers and a sunny morning together you have hours of fun.

Activity

Materials
Concrete bricks (52 cents at Bunnings)
Paint pens

Along with making flags, you could also provide concrete bricks for the children to paint/draw on. The kids can then take their special brick home with them. Check out Kelly’s post here: Rock Play Garden. These bricks cost only 52 cents.

The Cake

The cake is an edible pile of dirt, complete with a flag to match the play dirt. It’s super easy to make.

Boys Construction Chocolate Birthday Cake

Ingredients
One chocolate cake (any recipe) made in any tin you have to hand (it will be cut up so size and shape doesn’t matter)
Chocolate icing
Rice Bubbles
Milo

Method

1. Slice chocolate cake in half

2. Fill with marshmallows and jam place in the fridge to cool

3. Once cool, chop carve and hack the cake into a pile shape

4. Pour half of the chocolate icing over the cake

5. Add the remaining half of the icing to the rice bubbles pour on “the pile”

6. Cool in the refrigerator for 10 minutes and then sprinkle Milo over the top of the cake

7. Decorate with a flag and small diggers toys

Party Bags

The take home gift was a giant freckle on a paddleopo stick. It looked a little (bit of a stretch) like a shovel.

For Girls

I think girls would enjoy this party also but a sand/beach theme would work well too. A pile of sand, a few buckets of water and Barbies should do the trick!
