Moving is one of the biggest stressors in anyone's life. Moving with children adds to that stress. Children for the most part really need consistency, and when you move them to a new place it can really throw them off. They can act up, have mood swings or just become very emotional. My four year old was like a completely different child when we moved. His behavior was all out of whack. It took him a couple of months to get back on track. When we moved with our children we made a few mistakes, but in doing so learned some useful tips in case we ever have to move again.
Tip # 1: When moving with children: Make sure that you talk about it a lot. Get your child/children used to the idea of the move. Don't forget to validate their feelings, they may be scared, anxious or not even sure how they feel. Let them know you understand. The more they talk about it, the more comfortable they will be.
Tip # 2: When moving with children: Keep your child/children involved. Take them to see the house or apartment that you have picked out. Talk it up so that they will be excited about it. Try to make them think they had a say in the place that you are moving to. That way they will feel like they had some control which is very important to children.
Tip # 3: When moving with children: Remember to stay calm. Children feed off of adults, and if they see you getting upset they will get upset too. Remember, they watch everything.
