Video clips from the Internet, movies and television programs are the most common mediums in acquiring second language outside immersion and exposure to the actual culture and language.

In intermarriages, the child learns two languages because their parents have different native tongues. This is a lot easier for the child to handle compared to acquiring a second language through media. It is because that experience is more powerful in teaching the child the language. If it is normal to hear and speak two languages under one roof on a day-to-day basis, your child won't show any sign of difficulty. This could also allow your child to be more adaptive especially in learning new concepts and language as he grows. Migration also makes it easy for the child if they are still in their early language development years. But when they are already at school age you might need to help them in learning the language of your new community.

Contrary to what people commonly believe that learning two languages can lead to language delay, it actually helps the child master concepts and ideals allowing them to have better communication skills. Learning different words with the same meaning broadens the child's level of understanding, making it an advantage for them in terms of concept reading.

Some parents worry that learning two languages could actually lead to their child's confusion. But actually, confusion will only arise if parents and caregivers do not handle the situation properly. Combining the use of both languages while conversing may cause confusion, so speaking one language at a time will really help the child. A one-parent, one-language approach is a very useful tool to avoid confusion for the child in learning two languages all at the same time.

If confusion is your concern makes sure that you seek professional help to ensure focus and mastery of the two languages.

Learning two languages at home is better, and easier than learning them outside or through media. Media sources, especially the Internet – and even some cartoons, may sometimes have content that does not suit a certain child's age. Thus, learning from a parent or a professional assures parents that their children are exposed to age appropriate words and concepts.

At present, it is an advantage for people to learn or master other languages aside from their own. The corporate world is a very competitive market and in order to get though its dark alleys and sturdy walls one must have the skills that will equip a person to deal with this. One of the skills that would best help is communication skills and acquiring another language is indeed a benefit.

As young as a couple of months old you can help your child shape their future, and exposing them to languages is one of the things that you can do. It can also serve as your bonding moment, and in fact – you can even try learning a new language with your child. Both of you can benefit from the learning experience!
