Look in your garage ... see the baby bath in the corner? Reversible car seat stacked on top of the bar fridge? Spotting more Fisher Price logos than in Toys R Us? The worst part is – your kids are at school today. By school, I mean ‘Big School' - which means that pile of stuff (and more of it stored out of sight too, I am sure) is about half a decade old.

Time to clear it out! Look at what you have left. A pram? A cot? A couple of trikes? Are they in good condition or are they looking a little worse for wear? Some of these things could even make you some money if they were cleaned up and given a little TLC.

First, think about any friends that may be having children. While most first time parents can be keen to buy  everything new, many are more than happy to hand you some small change for your unwanted items. A friend of mine was more than pleased to buy a basinet from me at a fraction of the new price, knowing full well her son would only be in it for around 4 months.

If you don't have any friends having children, but you still have plenty to get rid of, consider a garage sale or if you haven't the time or energy, look into a local car boot sale at a church or school. Keep an eye on community notices in the paper or local newsletters for listings - the cost is usually minimal to participate and it is often asked that you donate a part of your total takings for the day, but it can mean leaving with an empty car and a full wallet! The benefit too is that if you have left anything that didn't sell, the church or playgroups are usually more than happy to receive donations.

Online auctions sites, Ebay in particular, is another option to offload your unwanted goodies. While sometimes it can be time consuming to photograph and list your items, list and go through the auction process, it is an inexpensive and convenient way to sell your items. Take note that while sometimes your items may achieve a price beyond your expectations, it can equally be disappointing for an item to sell well below expectations or have nobody bid at all! Unless you live in a major city, Ebay is best for smaller items that can be posted, such as clothing or small toys and books, as your buying market is broader. Be sure to always be honest in your listings too if there is any flaw or damage to your item, as even with used goods, buyers can be quite picky on Ebay!

Some second hand stores, particularly second-hand baby goods stores, will buy items in good condition or sell on consignment. Contact them through your Yellow Pages to find out if they are after particular stock. Be aware though, sometimes these stores can be inundated with certain items and may turn some things down only due to having too many already.

Think about local kindergartens, children's hospital wards or playgroups that may benefit from your items. Often their budgets are stretched and donations of items such as car seats, high chairs, toys, books and spare clothes are more than welcome. Contact them first to see if what you have is suitable and offer to deliver it to them. The warm fuzzy feeling you get is worth more than the monetary value would have ever been!
