One of life's greatest moments is the experience of pregnancy and the birth of a child. But with this amazing experience comes something else that is not so great. That is morning sickness. With its unpleasant symptoms of nausea during pregnancy and even vomiting it can make life very difficult for the mother to be during the early stages of pregnancy.
Why morning sickness happens is not entirely known but obviously with the pregnancy there is a lot going on inside the woman's body, so it may be the body's way of reacting to the pregnancy.
While the baby is growing there are lots of hormones being produced by the woman's body. These hormones may be contributing to the nausea during the pregnancy.
One such hormone is HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin). This is produced by both the baby and the mother. Then there is progesterone. This is another hormone which is produced in the woman's body during pregnancy. It may be responsible for the nausea and morning sickness because it causes your uterus muscles and intestines to relax. This can result in acid forming in your stomach which in turn makes you feel nauseous.
Another hormone which could be causing the nausea during pregnancy is estrogen. This hormone is always in the woman's body but during the early stages of pregnancy the amounts of estrogen increase.
Hormones may not be the only cause of nausea in the body. It can also be triggered off by odors. During pregnancy the sensitivity to smells and odors increases. Because of this some odors can be very strong and make you feel sick and even cause vomiting.
It has been shown that taking a B6 vitamin during pregnancy can give relief for morning sickness but this does not necessarily mean that you have a vitamin B deficiency. It seems to work for some women. Studies have shown that when comparing two groups, women who do suffer from morning sickness and those who don't did not have any big differences in the levels of B6 between them.
For most women the morning sickness goes away after the first trimester. This is when all the hormone levels come down. You can finally enjoy the pregnancy and planning for your baby.
But for some women it doesn't end and they can go on to have the symptoms for the duration of the pregnancy. Some women need medical assistance so that they can get through their pregnancy. It is important to remember to drink water so that you don't get dehydrated if you are vomiting.
